It appears that Funimation have confirmed their acquisition of anime streaming giant, Crunchyroll for a deal worth nearly $1.2 billion dollars.
In case you didn’t know, Funimation is actually owned by Sony Pictures – which say the deal will “broaden distribution” and “expand fan-centric offerings for consumers.”
Originally announced back in December 2020, Sony Pictures have finally got the deal over the line – quoting from their original press release:
“We are very excited to welcome Crunchyroll to the Sony Group,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman, President and CEO, Sony Group Corporation. “Anime is a rapidly growing medium that enthralls and inspires emotion among audiences around the globe. The alignment of Crunchyroll and Funimation will enable us to get even closer to the creators and fans who are the heart of the anime community. We look forward to delivering even more outstanding entertainment that fills the world with emotion through anime.”Sony Pictures Press Release
Personally, I’m actually really glad that the merger has taken place. Hopefully they can start coming up with a solution to combine the services – giving us the ultimate one stop shop for all things anime!
